Critical bug affects Bitcoin Core and puts 13% of nodes at risk
Bitcoin developers announced a critical security flaw in Bitcoin Core, which left more than 13% of global nodes vulnerable to potential attacks. The vulnerability, registered as CVE-2024-35202, affects all Core software versions prior to version 25.0, released in May 2023.
This problem arises in the compact block protocol, created to reduce bandwidth usage by shortening transaction identifiers. The failure occurs when an attacker forces a collision on these identifiers, leading the node to believe it has received a complete block, even when it has not. When entering this invalid state, the node may end up crashing, which puts its operation at risk.
Niklas Gögge, the researcher responsible for identifying this vulnerability, also developed a solution to the problem, which was included in version 25.0 of Bitcoin Core.
However, according to data from the BitNodes.io platform, around 13.7% of the 18,843 active nodes still remain vulnerable. This is because operators have not updated their software to the latest version. Because of this, Bitcoin developers have insisted that all node operators immediately update to version 28.0, thus ensuring the security of the network.

Bug na rede Bitcoin
Although this vulnerability does not provide immediate financial gains for potential attackers, it can be used by malicious entities interested in causing disruptions to Bitcoin operations.
This incident reinforces the importance of regular updates, as Bitcoin Core does not perform automatic updates. Therefore, node operators need to act manually to ensure that their systems are always protected.
Keeping nodes updated is essential for the security of the Bitcoin ecosystem, especially in the face of vulnerabilities like this. Inertia in carrying out updates can leave the network vulnerable to attacks, and, although the direct financial risk is small, network interruptions can cause great damage to the trust and stability of the system as a whole.
